There are 4 main ways to come. Please send in queries if you have any about travel options. We are happy to help if we can. Please remember to book a ride to or from Iiyama 48 hours in advance to avoid disappointment.
1. Drive: You can easily rent a car at the airport, put in our address or telephone number 0269-67-9066 on the GPS and it is about a 4-5 hour drive depending on traffic and weather and how many times you recalibrate (also known as get lost). The rental cars are easy to find and good value for a couple or group who plan to look around, but you must bring your local and international license to be able to rent.
2. Train: From Narita or Haneda you take the Narita Express train to Tokyo and then take the Hokuriku Shinkasen (bullet train) for 1 and 1/2 hours to Iiyama. From Iiyama there is a bus that meet each train (except the last one) and costs 6-700 yen to go up to Madarao. If you miss the bus you can take a taxi for around 6000 yen, or if you arrange in advance, we can pick you up. See our Add ons for booking a ride up or down. Check out this site for train arrangements. Jourdan's Japan Transit Planner.
3. Chartered taxi: Chuo Taxi offer an airport to door service that runs around the clock. You can book a van or join as an individual and wait for the van to fill before it leaves. The advantage is there are no trains or transfers to worry about and they take luggage. If you have a lot you will pay more, or you can take advantage of the takyubin (courier service) to send on your luggage and ski gear if you have a lot. The Yamato (Black Cat) is one of the best and have a desk at the airport that is easy to spot - you'll see the black cat sign all over Japan. Usually takes 48 hours or less. Just send to this address:

4. Bus options: There are great services to Madarao and from here to the surrounding resorts. They are a cheap and efficient way to explore the surrounding area with convenient and comfortable service.
A private company that provides great transport options in Madarao in the ski season is the Nagano Snow Shuttle. It is a bus service with regular services to and from Narita and Haneda Airports. The bus service stops at the Madarao Kogen Hotel daily in the ski season. It also can be used to go to other resorts such as Hakuba, Myoko Kogen, Shiga Kogen and Nozawa Onsen. See the blue Snow Shuttle link above for prices and bus schedules.
Another local transport service provider that comes to Madarao in the ski season is the Myoko Shuttle Service. For around 1000 yen they can take you to the Myoko area or, for a bit more, over to the newly opened Arai Resort. It is a cost effective way to go skiing at some of the other great resorts in Northern Nagano. They also have an airport shuttle. Click the link of the name in blue above for further information.
